Columbia Youth Racing

Columbia Sailing School offers many opportunities to get involved with racing. We have Spring and Fall Sailing Programs for younger sailors as well as large high school and college sailing programs. In addition to Interscholastic sailing, we also offer an Opti racing team and a C420 Racing Team for those sailors wanting to experience a high level of competition locally, regionally, and nationally.

Sailors will work with experienced US Sailing Level 2 and 3 Coaches expanding their skill-sets beyond what is offered in our advanced program. Small student-teacher ratios give our racers individualized attention so that improvements are made on a measurable scale.

Sailors will participate in team-building activities as well as our environmental initiatives. Last summer our sailors removed over 600 pounds of trash from Lake Michigan. We're hoping to set a new record this year!

Opti Race Team

Our Opti Race Team is designed for those competitive sailors who show dedication and passion for the sport and wish to participate in our 10-week racing program. Split into different levels dependent on skill and age, sailors will either be placed on the Green Team or the Red, White and Blue Team. Many of our students who join the Race Team have sailed in one or more of our other programs, including Prams. Students will spend time both on land and on the water, learning about all aspects of racing including boat handling and tactics. Our Race Team competes at both local and national regattas throughout the season. In previous years, our sailors have traveled all around the country to compete in USODA events and at the Orange Bowl International Youth Regatta in Miami, FL!

Race Team Participation requires director approval. Please email sail@colyc.org with any questions.

C420 Race Team

Our C420 Race Team is designed for those competitive sailors who show dedication and passion for the sport and wish to participate in our 10-week racing program. Many of our students who join the Race Team have sailed in one or more of our other programs, including Prams, Beginner/Intermediate C420, and Advanced C420. On land, students will spend time learning about boat tuning, watching boat handling videos, and learning about racing tactics and the racing rules of sailing. On the water, students will be trained with racing drills that encompass all aspects of the race course and develop advanced boat handling skills that will best prepare sailors for competition. Our Race Team competes at both local and national regattas throughout the season. In previous years, our sailors have traveled all around the country to compete in locations such as Newport Beach, CA, Buzzards Bay, MA, and Miami, FL!

Laser Race Team

Our Laser Race Team started in Summer 2017 with 5 boats. We are always looking to expand and recruit new sailors to this exciting addition to the program! Our Laser team competes locally and nationally. Sailors compete in the summer, as well as several high school events in the fall. The goal of this team is to instill new skills in the sailors, expose them to a high level of physical competition, and have fun with their friends.
